Dr. Sian “Leo” Proctor

Historic Spacecraft Pilot / Cosmic Artist

Greetings, Space and Art Enthusiasts!

I’m Dr. Sian “Leo” Proctor, an artist, poet, and astronaut with a passion for “Afrofuturism,” a cultural movement incorporating science fiction, technology, and futuristic elements into literature, music, and the visual arts to center Black history and culture. Here’s a glimpse into my cosmic journey:

  • First Black Commercial Astronaut: I was proud to serve as the pilot on Inspiration4, SpaceX’s first all-civilian spaceflight in 2021.
  • First Female Commercial Spaceship Pilot: I love breaking down barriers, and being a role model to girls who dream of experiencing the final frontier.
  • Geoscience Professor: I bring my knowledge of Earth sciences to space exploration.
  • Space Chef: I whip up meals in the unique environment of space.
  • Ice Hockey Player: I enjoy hitting the ice when I’m not exploring the stars.

What Excites Me About Space and STEM:

“I love using my geoscience knowledge to observe Earth from space. My STEM background helps me recognize unique concepts like experiencing Earthlight while in space.”

“As we push humanity to the moon, Mars, and beyond, it is important that we strive for a just, equitable, diverse, and inclusive space (J.E.D.I. Space) so that we can truly create space for all!”
